Case Study: Suffolk Libraries

Tailored Makaton training to support inclusive communication skills among Suffolk Libraries staff.

Overview

To support the development of inclusive communication skills among front-facing staff, Suffolk Libraries commissioned a tailored package of Makaton training delivered by our Accredited Makaton Trainer, Bethan. This programme aimed to build staff confidence in using Makaton to support a total communication approach.

The training offer included:

  • Makaton Taster Session 1 – Delivered via Zoom (Evening session)
  • Makaton Taster Session 2 – Delivered in person at Ipswich Library (Afternoon session)
  • Accredited Makaton Level 1 Training – Delivered online over two half-day sessions

Audience

Identified staff members working at Suffolk Libraries

Duration

Two taster sessions, each lasting 1.5 hours. Two Half day sessions, equalling 7.0 hours of teaching.

Makaton Taster Sessions

  • To have general introduction into what Makaton is and who uses it.
  • To learn around 30 useful everyday words plus another 12 on a particular theme e.g. holidays / Early Years

Makaton Level 1

  • To have a firm understanding and knowledge of the signs and symbols from stages 1 and 2 of the core Makaton vocabulary.
  • To feel confident in using signs and symbols at home or in your workplace.
  • To be able to develop the communication efficiency of children within the school setting.
