Let's Communicate

Case Study: Sigma Trust

Supporting staff in secondary schools with training on Language Link and wider understanding of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

Overview

To support the effective implementation of the Language Link assessment across several secondary schools, the Sigma Trust commissioned Communicate to deliver targeted training to identified staff members.

The training was designed to deepen understanding of how speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) present in secondary settings, and the significant impact these needs can have on:

  • Learning and academic progress
  • Behaviour and classroom engagement
  • Social and emotional wellbeing

In addition to exploring the use of Language Link, the session placed a strong emphasis on supporting young people beyond structured interventions. Staff were encouraged to think critically about why some students may be stagnating in their progress, and how underlying, often unmet communication needs could be contributing factors.

Audience

24 identified staff members working across secondary settings.

Duration

PD Day.

Learning Objectives

  • Define Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and understand the purpose and use of the Language Link assessment and intervention tool.
  • Understand the typical expectations for speech and language skills in secondary-aged students, and how these relate to classroom success.
  • Recognise the impact of SLCN on learning, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing, through the use of real-life case studies.
  • Identify the different types of SLCN, including those that occur alongside or as a result of other diagnoses (e.g. Autism, ADHD), and understand the concept of comorbidity.
  • Explore strategies for supporting students beyond prescribed interventions, including whole-class and inclusive approaches.
  • Analyse potential barriers to progress and develop a troubleshooting approach to support students who are not making expected gains.
