Developing Vocabulary - Helping Your Child Learn New Words

Most parents feel confident using those first words like "Mumma," "Dadda," "bye-bye," and "ta". But as children grow, it can be harder to know which words to focus on, especially if your child isn’t picking up new words as quickly as expected.

Learning new words can be tricky for all children. Many words have more than one meaning, depending on how they're used, and children often need to hear a word many times before they fully understand it, and even more before they start using it themselves.

The activities in this section are full of simple, fun ideas to help your child:

  • Understand new words
  • Use new words in everyday situations
  • Hear and see words through repetition

These strategies are helpful for all children, whether they’re starting to use words, using signs or gestures, or already talking more confidently.

Everyday routines like getting dressed, mealtimes, or bath time can all be great opportunities to grow your child’s understanding and use of vocabulary in a natural and relaxed way.
