Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. For those who experience the frustration of being unable to communicate meaningfully or effectively, Makaton really can help. Makaton takes away that frustration and enables individuals to connect with other people and the world around them.
Makaton is extremely flexible as it can be personalised to an individual's needs and used at a level suitable for them. Some of the ways it can be used are:
To share thoughts, choices and emotions
To label real objects, pictures, photos and places
To take part in games and songs
To listen to, read and tell stories
To create recipes, menus and shopping lists
To write letters and messages
The best way to learn Makaton is to attend a workshop. It means that you learn with other people, share your experiences, receive feedback on your signing and symbol work and it enables you to practice with others.
The Makaton Taster Sessions are short sessions designed for people who are interested in finding out about Makaton, deciding whether or not to attend further Makaton training or for those needing a few basic signs and symbols to get them started with Makaton.
The Taster, which is approximately 1 and a half hours long, gives you a general introduction into what Makaton is and who uses it, with the opportunity to learn a few signs and symbols too.
Makaton Signing for Babies is for parents, family members or carers who would like to sign with babies and children in their care and have no previous experience of Makaton. These sessions are designed for you and your child to have fun and learn together.
Makaton Signing for Babies training is a series of 6 sessions designed to encourage the development of communication and language skills in babies and toddlers. All the sessions are fun and interactive for you and your child. You will learn approximately 100 signs and symbols using songs, games and activities. You will receive a Makaton Signing for Babies Pocket Book which has the signs and symbols you have learned during the sessions. You will also be given a certificate of attendance.
